Chapter 23. Once There Was A Boy

When he was young he loved playing chess. For some unknown reason, he could spend hours playing alone or reading chess books. Dad would frown and say why are you wasting time? You better get up and help with the farm. Young Jack was addicted to chess. The pieces seemed to have a life of their own. The queen was powerful and the king could only move one square. It didn't make sense but who cares. Rules are rules. Without rules there is no game. Without rules there is nothing.

Dad's rule was ok, you can play all day as long as you get good grades in math. You should grow up to be an engineer like your uncle sam. He is smart and works in America now. Dad was not good in school. To be frank he is really dumb. Idk what mom saw in him. As an only child, I get all the attention. I wish I had a brother or sister, maybe I would be happier.

I can't complain though, I have all I need. Dad is hard working. The farm keeps him busy. We aren't rich. We are just getting by. It is the 1970s and Bobby Fischer is the world champion. I hope to be a grandmaster one day. That is my ultimate dream.
